Plumbing Emergency Guide
Quick action in a plumbing emergency can save thousands in water damage. Here's what to do right now.
First Steps - Do These NOW
Shut Off the Water
Find your main shutoff valve and turn it clockwise. This stops water flow to your entire house and prevents further damage.
Turn Off Water Heater
For electric: flip the breaker. For gas: turn the dial to "pilot" or off. This prevents damage to the unit if it runs dry.
Open Lowest Faucet
Open a faucet at the lowest point in your home to drain remaining water from the pipes.

Specific Emergencies
Shut off main water. If you can locate the leak, place a bucket underneath. Move valuables away from water. Do NOT turn water back on until repairs are made.
Remove the tank lid and push down the flapper to stop water flow into the bowl. Turn the shutoff valve behind the toilet clockwise. Don't flush again until cleared.
Do NOT run any water or flush toilets - this adds to the backup. The sewage is a health hazard - keep people and pets away. We'll arrive with proper equipment to clear the line safely.
Check that the pilot light is lit (gas) or that the breaker hasn't tripped (electric). If those check out, call us for diagnosis. This is urgent but not a true emergency.
Evacuate immediately. Do NOT use light switches, phones, or anything electrical. Call the gas company from outside, then call us for repair once the area is safe.
